TopNotch Tennis is one of the largest and most successful outdoor tennis programs in the McLean, Arlington, and Falls Church area for children and adults. Mani Barajas-Alexander, USPTA, USPTR
Founder & Director of Tennis
Mani is a native of Arlington, Virginia, and has been coaching for 15 years at some of the area’s premiere tennis clubs. He was a top-ranked junior player in the USTA Mid-Atlantic section and was nationally ranked. Mani played Division 1 collegiate tennis at Longwood University in Virginia where he was a four-year starter, singles and doubles MVP and team captain. In 2012, he helped coach the McLean Boys Varsity team to an undefeated season and earned a District Championship. He is currently the Boys Varsity Assistant Coach at The Potomac School. In 2014 & 2017, he helped lead the Potomac Boys Varsity team to a State Championship. Mani is also a certified professional with USPTA & USPTR.
Mani’s Philosophy: My coaching philosophy in tennis is a mixture of learning and fun. I strive to help develop a player’s stroke production, technique, mental and physical toughness, and court strategy. I am very passionate about tennis and enjoys teaching people of all ages and skill levels. I believe that personal goals can be achieved with the combination of hard work, focus, commitment, and self-discipline. I like to create a learning environment that is educational, fun, and high-energy and works to build relationships through a communication style that is positive, clear, and respectful. I believes tennis offers many skills that support the development and reinforcement of valuable life skills.
Glenn Gerbino, USPTA
Director of Adult Programs
Prior to his current position, Glenn lived in the Southwest for the past 22 years (El Paso, TX and Scottsdale, AZ) where he was the Director of Tennis at the El Paso CC, Troon CC and the Carefree Resort & Conference Center. Glenn also coached High School tennis in Arizona for 10 years. Glenn started his teaching career at Saddlebrook Resort with the Harry Hopman International Tennis Academy. Glenn has been a USPTA Elite Professional for the past 26 years and currently serves as the District Coordinator for Washington DC and Maryland in the USPTA Mid Atlantic Division. Glenn was also a Board Member, Conference Chairman and District Coordinator (Phoenix Area) for the USPTA Southwest Division. Glenn was a member of the National Cardio Tennis Speakers Team and has conducted Cardio Tennis classes throughout the Nation as well as teaching Cardio at National Conferences. Glenn received the USPTA Southwest Division “Pro of the Year” award in 2008 and the USPTA Southwest Division “High School Coach of the Year” award in 2009.
Glenn’s Philosophy: As an award-winning USPTA Elite Professional, coach, and Director at multiple clubs, I bring demonstrated management skills, teaching acumen, a strong work ethic, and an outgoing personality that I am eager to apply in support of the TopNotch Tennis program and its members. I strive to use utilize all my skills, enthusiasm, knowledge and experience to further the member’s tennis experience. I have built my reputation on exceptional customer service and a strong work ethic. I believe in collaborating closely with the staff, engaging with club management and listening to members’ needs to lead a safe, fun and successful tennis program.
Ivan Pizarro, USPTR
Director of Program Development
Ivan holds a professional level certification in Junior and Adult Development with USPTR, a certification in teaching Cardio Tennis, a high-performance certification from Bolletieri IMG Tennis Academy, and a Provisional Sports Psychology certification from California Southern University. He has been coaching for 11 years, 8 specifically in the Northern Virginia area and currently, Ivan serves at the middle and upper school tennis coach for The National Cathedral School and The Potomac School. Prior to professional coaching, Ivan played NCAA Div. II. tennis at Salem International University where he obtained his Bachelor degree in International Business.
Ivan’s Philosophy: I enjoy working with all ages and skill levels. I believe that patience and hard work is the key to success. I motivate my students to create strong habits and work towards their tennis goals. I create an environment of success on the court, starting with a complete assessment of each student so we can set goals for their tennis development. I am a strong believer in positive reinforcement and that with correct motivation anyone can achieve their goal.
Houston Ward, USPTA
Houston has been teaching players of all ages and skill levels for 3 years. As a junior player, he was ranked in the Mid-Atlantic top 20 before joining the team at Division 2 Philadelphia University. In college, he played both #1 singles and doubles before discovering his deep passion for coaching tennis fueled by a love for learning and sharing knowledge. Houston is also a USPTA certified professional.
Houston’s Philosophy: I believe that coaching is a powerful opportunity to positively affect the lives of others. This belief plays an instrumental role in my on-court philosophy, combining the learning process with self-awareness and high-energy fun in order to create a mutual learning experience!
